As we step into a new year, many of us reflect on fresh starts and set goals for the future. For Christian couples, this is an opportunity to focus on strengthening not just our bodies but also our relationships and faith. One beautiful way to do this is by cooking together. Sharing the kitchen can be more than just meal prep—it can be a spiritual and emotional act of healing, connection, and joy.

Food as Ministry in Your Own Home

In the Bible, food often symbolizes fellowship and provision. From Jesus feeding the five thousand to the Last Supper, food was central to His ministry. Why? Because meals bring people together. Cooking and eating together create space for meaningful conversations, shared laughter, and even quiet prayer. This year, consider viewing your kitchen as a ministry space—a place where love is not just spoken but stirred, baked, and shared.

A Healing Start to the New Year

January often finds us setting health goals, and food naturally plays a role in that. But what if we reframed healthy eating as a family act of faith? Instead of restrictive diets or perfection, we can focus on meals that nourish body and soul. For example, choosing whole, God-given ingredients like fruits, vegetables, grains, and proteins reminds us of the abundance He provides. Cooking these meals together offers moments to express gratitude, pray over your efforts, and renew your relationship with God and each other.

Breaking Free from Routine

It’s easy for the act of cooking to become mechanical—just another item on the to-do list. But this year, try viewing cooking as an adventure. Pick a new recipe that feels outside your comfort zone, or revisit a dish that has sentimental value. Maybe it’s the chicken casserole your grandmother used to make, or perhaps it’s trying a cuisine that reminds you of a mission trip or special memory. These intentional choices can make cooking feel less like a chore and more like a journey.

Devotional Moment: Bread of Life

Before diving into your meal, pause for a devotional moment. Reflect on John 6:35, where Jesus says, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry.” Let this verse remind you that while food nourishes your physical body, Christ sustains your spirit. Discuss how this truth applies to your lives as a couple. What areas feel “hungry” right now—emotionally, spiritually, or relationally? Pray together for God to fill those spaces as you work to nourish one another.

A Recipe to Begin the Year

Here’s a simple yet meaningful recipe to try:

Honey-Glazed Salmon with Roasted Vegetables

•  2 salmon fillets

•  2 tbsp honey

•  1 tsp Dijon mustard

•  1 tbsp olive oil

•  A mix of carrots, sweet potatoes, and broccoli, chopped

•  Salt and pepper to taste

Preheat the oven to 400°F. Toss vegetables with olive oil, salt, and pepper, then roast for 25-30 minutes. Meanwhile, mix honey and mustard, brush over salmon, and bake for 12-15 minutes. Serve together, and as you eat, talk about the sweetness of God’s promises in the new year.

As you welcome 2025, let your kitchen become a sanctuary of love, healing, and renewal. Together, you can nourish your bodies, deepen your faith, and strengthen the bond that makes your marriage a reflection of Christ’s love.
